Suez, a global leader in water and waste management, has identified for a long time the potential of microalgae and photosynthesis, and its partnership with Fermentalg goes back to 2015. CarbonWorks was born from this long-standing collaboration and set up in order to explore the potential of carbon capture and utilization by microalgae. Over time, CarbonWorks’ strategy evolved toward the precise cultivation of microalgae through controlled photosynthesis, in a protective and intense way. This approach now stands at the crossroads of biotechnology and environmental engineering, turning CO₂ into valuable biomass and bio-based actives, and capitalizes on the competences of its 2 founders.
CarbonWorks was established to pioneer Precision Photosynthesis technology, addressing
a critical gap in harnessing the photosynthetic capabilities of photosynthetic
microorganisms. Unlike conventional precision fermentation, where a multitude of machinery and process providers are well-established, there is currently no mature technology specifically
designed to industrially exploit the photosynthesis pathway. This joint venture is
spearheaded by Fermentalg, in collaboration with its strategic partner Suez and financial
investors. The CEO of Fermentalg also serves as the president of this joint venture, which is operationally managed by Imanol de Cherisey.
