At Fermentalg, we are committed to quality and sustainability all the way from sourcing and the supply chain right up to the customer.
Sourcing
● We select microalgae strains based on the nutritional and functional profiles identified by our R&D teams. This responsible sourcing method protects natural biomass and provides a sustainable, ethical alternative for DHA production.
● Ethical collection:. Our strains are collected only once from their natural environment (a few mililiters), ensuring minimal ecological impact while offering a fully vegan and sustainable source of omega-3s.
● Sustainable production: thanks to the capacity of microalgae to replicate, billions of daughter cells can be obtained from a single mother cell. The omega-3s from our microalgae are GMO-free.
Operations (Clean process)
● We conduct continuous quality checks at every stage of the production chain: from inoculation to closed-circuit fermentation with perfect control of inflow and outflow, solvent-free extraction, very low-impact refining, and final storage.
● A clean process: Our gentle, solvent-free extraction process, preserves the integrity of the raw material. Because our production takes place entirely above ground, it requires only a fraction of the agricultural land needed for omega-3 plant crops.
● A record high in natural concentration: Our oils require no chemical enrichment or concentration steps. Thanks to the natural productivity of our microalgae, we obtain a naturally high DHA concentration in its native form of triglycerides (min. 550 mg).
Supply chain
● Our teams select and purify microalgae strains in our high-tech laboratories in Libourne, ensuring optimal quality from the very first step.
● We preserve our strains in multiple cryobanks to secure reliable back-ups for all production runs.
● Our production sites, all located in Europe, and are continuously monitored by our teams and operate under strict quality management systems.
● The traceability of our products is thus guaranteed, from selection of microalgae strains through to the storage of our oils in drums.
Quality
● Fermentalg has been a member of GOED since 2017, and adheres to their commitment to the highest quality standards.
● DHA ORIGINS®, high purity oils: Fermentalg produces high quality DHA oils leveraging our bioindustrial expertise in microalgae, fully free from pollutants, heavy metals or pesticides.
● Trusted process according to our quality standards: DHA ORIGINS® omega-3s are within the thresholds specified by the GOED Monograph and EU guidelines, ensuring consistent quality and safety for our customers. In 2018, we achieved the ISO 22000 and FSSC22000 certifications in 2025 which guaranteed a full traceability from end to end and reinforcing our commitment to excellence.
Consumers in search of meaning: organoleptic quality remains a choice criterion
The sensory aspects of omega-3s
When we talk about omega-3s, their flavor and smell are often remarked on and this can be an obstacle to consumption. Omega-3 essential fatty acids provide genuine health benefits, so it is unfortunate that some consumers choose not to take them because of their organoleptic properties.
Taste is an essential criterion for consumers, with 59% of them considering it a determining factor in their purchasing decisions as reported by FMCG gurus in 2025. They want products that they can easily incorporate in their daily diet, effortlessly and without compromise.
Plant-based omega-3 oils are a far more pleasant alternative for consumers in sensory terms.
How can we optimize the organoleptic quality of omega-3s ?
Various areas ensure the organoleptic neutrality essential for products to obtain high consumer acceptance:
● Fermentalg continuously optimizes its production processes, from raw materials to finished products, to guarantee organoleptic neutrality and premium quality.
● The selection of plant-based oils naturally rich in DHA, with a neutral flavor
● Systematic organoleptic testing to ensure neutral taste and high consumer acceptance
Innovation through difference
Color is the first aspect consumers notice. If the color is attractive, they will be more likely to buy and consume a product. Original colors can be used to highlight the health benefits of the product, reinforcing the connection between appearance and efficacy. Product color is a genuinely convincing differentiating factor. Consumers can see the health benefits they will be gaining at first glance, encouraging them to purchase a given product and boosting their confidence in it.
Color is therefore not only aesthetic but also functional, providing visual information on the product’s properties.
In its product portfolio, Fermentalg offers natural oils in 2 colors: yellow and orange. For example, DHA ORIGINS® 550-O oil displays a vibrant orange to dark orange color due to naturally occurring carotenoids such as beta-carotene and astaxanthin.
In conclusion
Sustainable food and brand commitment have become real challenges for society. They create a context of trust and goodwill among producers, businesses and consumers. Consumers are willing to pay more for quality food that is a source of natural health and balance for themselves and the ecosystem, and that respects all stakeholders and biodiversity..
Despite their strong commitment to protecting the environment, consumers are not yet ready to sacrifice organoleptic quality. Products must remain pleasant to consume while delivering real health benefits.
In the omega-3 market, plant-based oils derived from microalgae now more than ever represent a natural health solution thanks to their naturally high DHA content. They meet high consumer expectations regarding ethical sourcing, environmental protection and animal welfare without compromise on the taste. Produced above ground with gentle, solvent-free extraction processes, they emplify Fermentalg’s clean process approach, resulting in this exceptional natural product.
